Ruud van Nistelrooy takes the reins of Leicester: a path strewn with pitfalls

Leicester City find themselves at a crossroads once again, as Ruud van Nistelrooy takes the reins after the brief stint of Cooper, whose tenure lasted just 12 games. In this new chapter, Van Nistelrooy will have to navigate a club led by stalwart duo Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha—nicknamed Top—a 39-year-old Thai billionaire, and Jon Rudkin, 56, who has gone from volunteer youth coach to operations director Leicester football clubs.

Top, the son of the illustrious Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, who founded the King Power empire, has shown unwavering support for Rudkin despite the turmoil the club has gone through, including relegation to the Championship in 2023, coaching dismissals and significant financial difficulties. Their connection is obvious; whenever Top visits the training ground in Britain, Rudkin is often by his side. Interestingly, Rudkin maintains a certain level of autonomy over the club’s operations, with even general manager Susan Whelan taking a step back when it comes to footballing matters such as player exchanges and management decisions.

By nominating Van Nistelrooy over other notable candidates including Graham Potter and Niko Kovac, it is understood that Top and Rudkin played crucial roles in the decision-making process. Beyond his involvement with Leicester, Rudkin also plays a significant role in the King Power racing team, which is primarily overseen by breeding agents SackvilleDonald.

This week, Top made a speech to the team, expressing his disappointment at their disappointing performances under Cooper and raising concerns about their extravagant trip to Copenhagen for the annual Christmas party. Financial sustainability remains a pressing concern for the club, and the burden of settling another coaching contract could add strain to their already delicate financial position and compliance with Premier League profitability regulations.

Van Nistelrooy’s first challenge will be to assess the influence exerted by certain players within the squad. A notable example is Jannik Vestergaard, who was ruled out under Brendan Rodgers during the 2022-23 season, not even receiving the chance to train with the first team. Upon his return under Enzo Maresca, Vestergaard was given a new three-year contract—managed by Rudkin—after Maresca left for Chelsea.

Despite the coaching changes, Vestergaard remains in the squad, having been neglected by Cooper after the international break, coinciding with the player suffering an ankle injury. This juxtaposition highlights a broader dynamic problem; While experienced players—including Conor Coady, Vestergaard and Harry Winks—enjoyed a night out in Copenhagen, others, including captain Jamie Vardy and Wilfred Ndidi, decided not to attend.

With Van Nistelrooy’s illustrious background as a player, the jump to management presents its own set of obstacles. Having just 55 senior games under his belt at clubs such as Manchester United and PSV Eindhoven, he will have to keep a close eye on the players’ internal relationships, especially after footage showed players enjoying their trip while others suffered from injuries.

As new challenges loom for Leicester, all eyes will be on Van Nistelrooy to see if he can get things back on track amid the legacy and high expectations that shroud this historic club.
