a sixty-year-old summoned to court in February

The man arrested Wednesday evening, suspected of being the author of a letter threatening the death of Mayor Fabrice Loher, received at the end of November at the town hall, will appear before the criminal court on February 20, 2025. At the end of his custody on sight, the 67-year-old from was brought before the Lorient public prosecutor's office this Friday, November 29, 2024.

He will be judged for “responsible for acts of death threats or attacks on property dangerous to people, against an elected public official and insults to a person holding public authority”as indicated by the public prosecutor, Stéphane Kellenberger. A psychiatric expertise was also required.

Placed under judicial supervision

The sixty-year-old was placed under judicial supervision, by the judge of liberty and detention in accordance with the requisitions of the prosecution, including in particular “prohibitions from appearing at the town hall of Lorient, from coming into contact with the mayor, from holding and carrying weapons and obligations to regularly attend the police station, to be monitored by an association and to respond to summons”.

According to the mayor, the man is suspected of being the author of the threatening letters against him “received since December 26, 2022.” “While it seems likely that this person acted under the influence of psychological disorders, this in no way justifies or excuses the seriousness of the terms used in his numerous correspondence, indicates the mayor in a press release. This event, unfortunately, illustrates a worrying trend: the increase in acts of intimidation, threats and sometimes physical violence against elected officials, guarantors of the democratic functioning of our Republic.”
