This Frenchman, now 60 years old, was sentenced to death in 2007 for drug trafficking which he always contested. Indonesia is known for its very strict anti-drug laws, one of the toughest in the world.

The Serge Atlaoui affair caused a stir in Indonesia. It was 2005. He was arrested at a factory where investigators found drugs. Initially sentenced to life in prison, this father of four saw the Supreme Court increase his sentence on appeal. It was to be executed in 2015 alongside eight other convicts. But at the time, France had put pressureand Serge Atlaoui had obtained a temporary reprieve.

Today, this Frenchman can hope to be repatriated before the end of the year. Because Indonesia is currently in discussions with France, but also with Australia and the Philippines with a view to repatriating several detainees, said Yusril Ihza Mahendra, Indonesian Minister in charge of Legal Affairs and Human Rights.
