The European Union welcomed the entry into force on Wednesday of a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon as well as “the mediation efforts undertaken by France and the United States” which made it possible to achieve a cessation of hostilities.
“It is now essential that the ceasefire holds as agreed, to ensure security in both Lebanon and Israel and to allow displaced people on both sides of the border to return home. Above all, this requires the commitment of both parties: the sovereignty of Lebanon and Israel must be fully respected and all cross-border attacks must stop,” an EU statement said.
The EU also indicated that it was ready to “support the Lebanese army and UNIFIL so that Resolution 1701 can be effectively and fully implemented on the ground”. She assured that she “will also continue its humanitarian aid and engage in reconstruction”.
The EU further called on Lebanese political leaders “to quickly put aside their differences and find a way out of the prolonged political and economic impasse (…) and to quickly elect a president.”
