A week after his arrest in Portugal, Abdoul Diallo, main suspect in the murder of Lilian Dejean, municipal agent in Grenoble, was handed over to the French authorities this Thursday, November 28, franceinfo learned from a source close to the case this Friday.

Aged 25, the suspect was the subject of a European arrest warrant since the murder which occurred on September 8. He was arrested on Thursday, November 21 in Povoa de Lanhoso, a municipality in the Braga region, by the Portuguese police.

He was first taken to the court. He will then be transferred to Grenoble to be presented to the investigating judge in charge of the case.

The suspect, known for a history of violent crimes, had taken refuge in northern Portugal. He was located with the help of French police before being arrested after 74 days on the run. According to the judicial police in Isère, more than forty investigators participated in the search for the suspect. The news of the suspect's arrest had relieved the victim's relatives.

The day after his arrest, Abdoul Diallo was heard by a Portuguese judge and did not oppose his extradition to France, according to the Portuguese police. He is suspected of having killed Lilian Dejean, a 49-year-old cleaning agent, on September 8.

The father 49-year-old family member, was shot in the chest while trying to prevent the suspect from fleeing after a traffic accident while driving a rental car registered in Poland.

Identity papers in the name of Abdoul Diallo, domiciled in the suburbs of Grenoble, had been found in the car abandoned by its driver who had fled on foot.

Rushed to hospital, Lilian Dejean died in hospital while the driver of the vehicle hit by the suspect during the accident, an elderly woman, was slightly injured.

Abdoul Diallo, incarcerated for the first time at 15, already has 19 convictions on his criminal record for acts of violence and drug trafficking. In total, he was sentenced to 6 years in prison over the last 10 years, the public prosecutor said during a press conference.

In June 2023, he notably beat, with five fellow prisoners, another prisoner at the Varces remand center, in Isère. Tried in August 2023 for this violence, he was sentenced to four months in prison with a ban on possessing a weapon for five years. A week after his return to prison, he was again involved in new violence for which he was to be tried on October 3.

The murder of Lilian Dejean had all the more resonance in Isère as it occurred in the middle of dark series for the metropolis of Grenoble, where according to the authorities a “gang war” between drug traffickers is playing out.
