Lebanon denounces two Israeli attacks in the south of the country, despite the ceasefire

Two Israeli attacks were reported this Thursday in southern Lebanon, the day after the ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel came into force. One of them, the nature of which remains to be clarified, left two people injured.

An Israeli tank opened fire on Thursday, November 28, twice near the town of Kfarshouba, in southern Lebanon, the Lebanese state news agency (Ani) announced.

The agency indicates that Israeli fire also injured two people in the village of Markaba, still in southern Lebanon.

These attacks come the day after the entry into force of a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah prohibiting “offensive military operations”.

Israel speaks of “suspects” arriving “with vehicles”

Israeli army spokesperson Avichay Adraee reiterated Thursday morning a warning to Lebanese residents not to enter the area adjoining the Israeli border.

The Lebanese army also called on civilians, returning en masse to their devastated villages, not to approach areas where the Israeli army is still located. Ani also claimed that the Israeli army had fired on several border villages, including Khiam where violent clashes had opposed it to Hezbollah before the ceasefire came into force.

For its part, the Israeli army announced Thursday that it had “opened fire” towards “suspects (…) arriving with vehicles in a certain number of areas of southern Lebanon, not respecting the conditions of the ceasefire.” -fire”.

Israeli army must withdraw within 60 days

Under the agreement sponsored by the United States and , the Israeli army has 60 days to gradually withdraw from southern Lebanon and Hezbollah must evacuate this region. The Israeli army has not yet announced withdrawal operations.

A Lebanese army source told AFP on Thursday that the army “continues its deployment south of the Litani, conducts patrols and installs checkpoints.” She clarified that “the army is not advancing into areas where the Israeli army is still present.”

On Wednesday evening, the Lebanese army entered the Christian village of Qlaaya, near the border, to the cheers of the residents. “We only want the Lebanese army in Lebanon,” residents chanted, applauding the army column, waving Lebanese flags and throwing flowers and rice at the soldiers, according to an AFP correspondent.

According to Lebanese authorities, at least 3,823 people have been killed in the country since October 2023, most since the end of September. On the Israeli side, 82 soldiers and 47 civilians died in 13 months, according to the authorities.
