SOCCER. Alexandre Wamba-Okolonga has made his choice.
The Voltigeurs ball carrier from Cégep de Drummondville will join the University of Sherbrooke next season. The 20-year-old student-athlete was also courted by programs at Bishop’s and McGill universities.
At the end of an in-depth reflection through which his family had their say, Alexandre Wamba-Okolonga came to the conclusion that the Sherbrooke program is the one that best fits his career path.
“I am convinced that this is the ideal place to reach my full potential, both academically and athletically. In addition, having coach Luc at my side will be a valuable asset for me,” he explained, referring to Luc Sylvain, who is both part of the coaching staff of the Voltigeurs and the Vert et Or.
In Sherbrooke, the man nicknamed Alex Wamba will also join Drummondville coach Louis Leclerc. Remember that cornerback Raphaël Lemieux, originally from Saint-Cyrille-de-Wendover, was also recruited by the Vert et Or recently.
At the end of the last season, Alexandre Wamba-Okolonga was proclaimed MVP in the southwest section of division 3 of the Quebec collegiate circuit. The speedy 5-foot, 7-inch, 155-pound running back led the league with 148 carries, rushing for 1,239 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Also playing basketball, Alex Wamba was introduced to football within the Drummondville Vandoos program.
