Jaguar buys back 2760 2019 I-Pace due to fire risk | Automotive news

Certain 2019 versions of Jaguar’s I-Pace electric SUV have been recalled five times since May 2023. The reason? The high voltage battery may overheat and cause a fire.

The problem is that the company still hasn’t found a permanent solution to this problem. Faced with this reality, the manufacturer decided to repurchase the models concerned, i.e. 2,760 units which were built between January 5, 2018 and March 14, 2019.

A first reminder in 2023
It was in mid-2023 that the problems began to manifest themselves. It was then that a first recall was issued. Owners were advised to park and charge their vehicles outside and away from structures until the solution, a software update intended to monitor the operational status of the battery pack assembly in the event of a potential thermal overload, is carried out.

A few months later, in October, the vehicles were recalled again because the repair did not resolve the situation. In 2024, the model was invited to the workshop for the same problem in February, March and August.

On November 11, the company’s managers decided to repurchase the models.

Road & Track magazine, which reports the news, recalls that three fires have been reported in the United States concerning 2019 I-Paces that have received software updates. Fortunately, no accidents or injuries have been reported in connection with the issue.

The American NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration), the equivalent of Transport Canada, specifies that the company will take back the vehicles and keep them under its control until further notice. Until all models are reacquired, a software update, which limits the battery state of charge to 80%, is required.

The high-voltage battery set was produced by LG Energy Solution Company, which is not having its first glitches of this type with certain electric models. Let’s just remember the saga surrounding the Chevrolet Bolt EV.
