Haiti: new violence in the Artibonite

Gang violence is not limited to the capital, Port-au-Prince. In other regions of the country, armed groups act with complete impunity, causing tragedies for local populations. Frantz Duval, editor-in-chief of Le Nouvelliste, sheds some light on the situation.

According to the News writer, “dozens of bandits from the Gran Grif de Savien gang invaded the village of Coutang, in Savane Boule,… in the Artibonite department, early Wednesday November 27, 2024”. This attack left at least three people dead. The Federation of Peasant Organizations and Agricultural Entrepreneurs of the Artibonite Valley denounces the inaction of the authorities, recalling that “this is not the first time that this community has been the victim of Gran Grif’s crimes.” Last week, “ 12 peasants were kidnapped in the region and are suffering torture, their families not having the financial means to pay for their release ».

At the same time, gangs are responsible for an increase in sexual violence in Haiti, a situation denounced by Human Rights Watch. This violence is aggravated by the impossibility of access to care, with health centers often closed due to insecurity.

With Frantz Duval, we are also tackling a more positive subject: the tribute paid to the Haitian writer Dany Laferrière, who will be immortalized on postal stamps in Canada. A distinction which arouses a certain irony in Haiti, where postal service is almost non-existent.
