Five restaurant patrons burned after ethanol heat lamp explodes

The incident occurred when an employee was filling the ethanol stove of this lamp which was located near the table.

Five customers seated at a restaurant in (Alpes-Maritimes) on Wednesday evening were burned after an explosion linked to an ethanol heat lamp which was near their table, police and firefighters reported. Emergency services had to treat three people seriously injured by burns of varying degrees, two of whom had to be airlifted to hospital ().

Burning ethanol bottle

The incident occurred when an employee of the restaurant located on Cours Félix-Faure was filling the gelled ethanol stove of this heat lamp. A sudden movement by a guest at that moment would have created a draft from the flame, police explain. The ethanol bottle apparently ignited before the explosion occurred while customers were seated nearby.

The victims, aged between 30 and 56, are of Italian nationality and were dining at this popular downtown Cannes restaurant after attending a conference at the Palais des Festivals. Those more lightly affected were also transported to hospital. The terrace of the establishment was evacuated in the evening. Heating on restaurant terraces has been prohibited by law since March 2022, which may raise questions about the use of this lamp.
