COLUMBUS – Sometimes history writes itself. Just ask Cole Caufield, who scored his 13th of the season in a 4-3 overtime win against the Columbus Blue Jackets at Johnny Gaudreau’s home on Wednesday.
With a goal behind – and 13 minutes left in the second period – Caufield received a pass from Juraj Slafkovsky which allowed him to escape and level the score at two goals on each side, directly under Gaudreau’s hanging banner in the heights of the Nationwide Arena.
Emil Heineman and Zach Werenski exchanged goals in the final period, forcing a second overtime in as many nights for Montreal. This time, however, things turned in favor of the Habs, as Nick Suzuki jumped on his own throw return to thread the needle and seal the outcome of the match.
Slafkovsky scored the first for the Canadians in a 2-on-1 surge in the first period, setting the tone for his fourth multi-point outing of the current campaign.
