Fuel prices in : constant fluctuation but discernible trends

For French motorists, the price of fuel is a subject of daily concern. Fluctuations, both at the pump and on the global market, but above all, sudden increases, often give rise to concern. To better understand the current situation and changes in fuel prices in France, let's take a detailed look at the latest available data.

Analysis of current prices and developments

Gasoline (Unleaded 98 E5 and Unleaded 95 E5/E10)

Unleaded 98 (E5), often preferred for its combustion quality, is currently €1.843/l. Over the previous week, its price increased by 1.7 cents per liter, an increase of 0.90%. Over the month, the increase is more moderate, 1.3 cents per liter. However, over the past year, the price has decreased by 4.4 cents per liter, a decrease of 2.30%. This downward annual trend is encouraging for motorists who fuel SP98, despite recent slight increases.

Unleaded 95 (E5), an alternative that is often less expensive than 98, costs €1.773/l. In one week, its price increased by 1.5 cents per liter, which represents an increase similar to that of SP98 in percentage (+0.90%). Over one month, the trend is also upward (+2.0 cents/l and +1.10%). However, over a year, SP95 saw its price drop by 5.3 cents per liter, representing a decrease of 2.90%.

Unleaded 95 (E10) follows a comparable trend. It is slightly cheaper at €1,739/l. Once again, we observe a small weekly increase of 1.7 cents per liter (+1.00%), and over the previous month, an increase of 1.2 cents. Over one year, the reduction is more marked with a drop of 6.7 cents, or -3.70%.

Bioethanol E85

Bioethanol E85 continues to be one of the most economical fuels, with a price of €0.813/l. This option is very attractive for compatible vehicles, especially when we observe a moderate increase of 0.6 cents over the week (+0.70%) and 0.8 cents over the month (+1.00%) . The annual reduction, however, remains impressive: the price fell by 20.6 cents per liter over the year, a fall of 20.20%. This reflects the market volatility in this sector, but also the potential for motorists to make significant savings.

Diesel (B7)

Traditionally the preferred fuel for long journeys, Diesel is currently €1.679/l. It saw a notable increase last week of 2.3 cents per liter (+1.40%), and an even more significant increase of 5.3 cents over the month (+3.30%). However, over the year, the price of diesel fell by 13.1 cents per liter, which represents a decrease of 7.20%. This annual data suggests a fluctuation with potential corrective trends after the wave of widespread diesel reduction.

GPL

LPG is another economical alternative to gasoline and diesel, currently sold at €1.008/l. It recorded a price increase of 0.9 cents last week (+0.90%), with an increase of 0.4 cents over the month (+0.40%). On an annual basis, there was a slight increase of 1.2 cents per liter, an increase of 1.20%.

Conclusion

In view of this analysis, it is clear that the fuel price landscape in France is marked by volatility, influenced by a multitude of global economic factors, tax policies, and technological developments. Significant annual declines in certain categories such as Bioethanol E85 and Diesel indicate opportunities for motorists to rethink their fuel choices to benefit from potential savings.

For motorists in France, attention must be focused not only on weekly and monthly fluctuations which can alert to sudden increases, but also on broader annual trends, which offer
