The ICC suspects Israeli Prime Minister and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant of being “criminally responsible” for the war crime of starvation, as well as crimes against humanity.
Israel notified the International Criminal Court (ICC) this Wednesday, November 27, of its intention to appeal the arrest warrants targeting its Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes, announced the office of the Prime Minister of the Jewish state. Pending a decision on the merits, Israel also asked the ICC to suspend the execution of these two arrest warrants issued Thursday, November 21, the Israeli Prime Minister's office said in a press release.
The ICC also issued an arrest warrant against the head of Hamas's armed wing, Mohammed Deif. They cover the period between October 8, 2023, the day after the Hamas terrorist attacks against Israel, and at least until May 20, 2024, the date on which ICC prosecutor Karim Khan filed his request.
The international court says it believes that Netanyahu and Gallant are “criminally responsible” of the war crime of starvation, as well as crimes against humanity of murder, persecution and other “inhumane acts”. The ICC also claims that the two men “also bear criminal responsibility as civilian leaders for the war crime of intentionally directing an attack against the civilian population”.
