The redevelopment of the Place du 30 Octobre, in Dijon, is at the heart of a real controversy. Three months after the end of the work, the promises do not seem to be kept. The Agir pour Dijon group, in a recent press release, highlights the numerous difficulties affecting users and residents of this strategic place in the city.
Monster traffic jams and frustrated motorists
The main complaint concerns the capacity of the new roundabout to absorb road traffic. According to the observation of the Agir pour Dijon group, the current design does not meet the needs of motorists, causing massive traffic jams on the roads upstream of the square, in particular boulevards Carnot and Voltaire. On certain days of the week, the situation becomes chaotic, forcing many drivers to avoid the square and take alternative routes not intended for this type of traffic. Result: longer journeys and congested neighboring streets.
Bus late, passengers on foot
The problems don't end there. The redevelopment also seems unsuitable for Divia buses, whose length poses problems when crossing the square. Frequently stuck in traffic jams, buses accumulate delays, impacting schedules and user satisfaction. In some situations, passengers were even forced to get off and continue their journey on foot.
Inadequate infrastructure for cyclists and pedestrians
The pedestrian area, although reorganized for greater conviviality, also presents notable defects. The sand used for the ground poses a particular problem for people with reduced mobility and, being dispersed by pedestrian footsteps, it sometimes covers cycle paths. This has already caused cyclists to fall, making the place dangerous for the most vulnerable users.
A regrettable lack of consultation
The Agir pour Dijon group recalls that it is regrettable that the warnings expressed during the meeting with local residents at the Salle de Flore were not taken into account. Despite the considerable cost of the project, estimated at 1.8 million euros, it seems that design and implementation errors were made, due to a lack of prior consultation.
Urgent changes to consider
Faced with the difficulties experienced since the end of the work, the group calls on the town hall to act quickly. Among the necessary modifications, Agir pour Dijon proposes in particular the widening of traffic lanes to make traffic flow more smoothly, as well as more effective stabilization of the pedestrian surface to improve accessibility.
For the Agir pour Dijon group, the observation is clear: it is time to learn from these errors and correct the defects of this redevelopment to find a functional and pleasant place, meeting the expectations of Dijon users.
Press release of November 26, 2024:
October 30 Square: we need to review the copy!
The redevelopment of the Place du 30 Octobre does not fulfill all its promises. Since the end of the work and the start of the school year, disappointments have accumulated and users have become disillusioned. The capacity to absorb road traffic by the new roundabout is clearly insufficient in relation to the flows. This results in monster traffic jams certain days of the week on the roads upstream of the square, notably Carnot and Voltaire boulevards.
It's a lottery that motorists no longer want to play, refusing to pass through this square and taking alternative routes, with longer journeys on streets not provided for this purpose. The space is unsuitable for the dimensions of Divia buses, often stuck in traffic jams, with schedule delays. Passengers are forced to get off buses to continue on foot.
The sand in the area reserved for pedestrians is unsatisfactory for people with reduced mobility and dangerously covers cycle paths, causing cyclists to fall. It is regrettable that the warnings expressed during the meeting with local residents in the Salle de Flore, chaired by the first deputy at the time, were not heeded.
Despite the cost of the project, €1.8 million, we must admit errors in design and construction, and a lack of prior consultation. Three months later, it is time to draw conclusions from these repeated observations. Modifications are necessary, including widening traffic lanes and stabilizing the surface.
