In this publication, we discover that in October 2024, consumer prices fell by 0.2% in Mayotte but they remain up 1.9% over one year.
Prices of manufactured goods hurt
If the prices of food, energy and tobacco fall in October 2024, those of manufactured products start to rise again after having stabilized last September and the prices of services remain stable. Moreover, during the period from October 2023 to October 2024, prices increase more in Mayotte (+1.9%) than at the national level (+1.2%). At the national level, prices increased over one month (+0.3%) after a historic monthly drop in September 2024 (-1.2%). Food prices fell by 0.2% in October, after a drop of 0.5% in September. The rise in prices of fresh products slowed down once again (+0.2%), while the prices of other food products fell (-0.3%).
Energy prices fall
In October, energy prices fell by 1.9% in line with the drop in prices of petroleum products (-3.5%). In fact, the price of a liter of gasoline has fallen by 8 cents, that of diesel by 7 cents. Gas bottle prices are increasing by 50 cents (+2.1%) and electricity prices are stable. For the third consecutive month, prices of services are stable in October 2024, after four months of increase. Prices of transport services fell by 0.9%, while those of health services, rents, water, household waste collection, communications and other services were stable. But the prices of manufactured products started to rise again in October (+0.3%), due to the increase in the prices of clothing and shoes (+1.6%). Prices of health products and other manufactured products are stable. In October, tobacco prices fell by 1%.
In one year, prices increase more in Mayotte than at the national level
Over one year, between October 2023 and October 2024, prices increase by 1.9% in Mayotte, more than at the national level (+1.2%). Year-on-year, the slowdown in inflation that began in July continues in Mayotte (-0.2 points compared to September). The prices of food and tobacco increase more over one year in Mayotte than at the national level, while those of services increase less (figure 2 and figure 3). As for manufactured products, their prices remain increasing over one year in Mayotte and are decreasing nationally. Energy prices are falling slightly in Mayotte and more sharply at the national level. The increase in prices of services over one year continued to rise in October (+2% after +1.7% in September), but annual inflation remains slightly lower than the national level (+2.3%).
In Mayotte, services represent 38% of household consumption. Over one year, the increase in prices in services is linked to that of rents, water, household waste collection (+0.4%), transport services (+4.7%, with +10.4% for air transport) and health services (+0.4%), while the prices of communications services are stable. The prices of other services increased by 2.8%, notably linked to the increase in prices for insurance, financial services and catering. At the national level, the prices of communications services fell sharply again (-13.6%), while those of health services fell more moderately (-0.2%).
The prices of rent, water, transport and household waste collection are causing the rise in prices of services to explode at the national level
It is the increase in the prices of rent, water, collection of household waste (+2.9%), transport services (+4.1%) and other services (+3.5%) which causes the increase in prices in services at the national level. Over one year, in October, food prices increased by 2.8% in Mayotte after a slowdown in September (+2.6% compared to +3.7% in August). Food inflation remains higher than nationally, where food prices increased by 0.6% year-on-year in October.
Food accounts for 23% of household consumption in Mayotte. Over one year, the prices of fresh products increased sharply (+14.8% in Mayotte compared to +4.5% nationally). Those of other food products increased by 0.4%, while they were stable at the national level. Over one year, the prices of manufactured products increased in October by 1.1%, while they fell at the national level (-0.2%). Manufactured products account for 28% of household consumption. The prices of health products are falling (-4.2%), while those of clothing and shoes (+3%) and other manufactured products are increasing (+0.4%). At the national level, prices of health products are also falling (-1.2%), while prices are stable for clothing and shoes and other manufactured products.
-0.2% on energy prices over one year for the first time since August 2023
Over one year, energy prices fell for the first time since August 2023 (-0.2%). Energy accounts for 9% of the household budget in Mayotte. The drop in energy prices over one year is linked to that of petroleum product prices (-12.9%), while electricity prices are increasing sharply (+19.9%). At the national level, energy prices fell by 2% year-on-year in October, driven by the sharp drop in the prices of petroleum products (-12%). Tobacco prices increased by 23.9% over one year in Mayotte (+8.7% nationally).
