A natural radioactive gas is present in this region of Haut-Rhin: you can measure it

The territory of Country Thur Doller is one of the areas of the department which is rather exposed to radon.

This natural, radioactive gas, classified as a “definite human carcinogen” since 1987 by the International Cancer Research Center (IARC), is present in 32 municipalities in the Pays Thur Doller out of 46 at risk of “high” potential, according to the center of territorial and rural balance.

Concretely “if it is present in significant concentrations, radon can promote the occurrence of bronchopulmonary cancers, particularly if we are exposed to this gas for a long period”.

To fight against this, the territory is organizing a campaign to detect the presence you radon.

A kit to measure its presence available

“In 2024, as part of its local health contract (CLS), Pays Thur Doller is joining the prevention approach launched by the approved air quality monitoring association ATMO and the Regional Health Agency (ARS) for raising public awareness about radon in the home,” underlines the municipal territory.

In this context, volunteer residents of 46 municipalities of Pays Thur Doller will be able to obtain a free kit of measure radon, to be installed in their home.

You will need to register on a platform (information not yet shared), receive the kit and install it at home for several weeks.

Radon mainly penetrates through the lower parts of the building which are either in contact with or closest to the ground. Thus, basements, cellars, crawl spaces constitute the preferential entry zones for radon, before accumulating in the building. So it will be easy to know if you have any.

Measures to reduce it will then be presented to you.
