Two Vietnamese writers, Nguyen Binh Phuong and Nguyen Mot, were awarded the 2022-2023 Southeast Asian Writers’ Award (SEA Write Award) by the Thai Royal Family and the Thai Writers’ Association, a Reserved Award to outstanding writers and poets from Southeast Asian countries.
Bangkok (VNA) – Two Vietnamese writers, Nguyen Binh Phuong and Nguyen Mot, have been awarded the 2022-2023 Southeast Asian Writers’ Award (SEA Write Award) by the Thai Royal Family and the Writers’ Association Thai, an Award reserved for outstanding writers and poets from Southeast Asian countries.
The Gala honoring the award winners was solemnly held at the W Bangkok Hotel on the evening of November 25, with the participation of 17 writers and poets from nine countries (Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines , Vietnam and Thailand).
Nguyen Binh Phuong (born 1965 in Thai Nguyen) received the 2022 Southeast Asian Writers’ Prize for his novel “A Mediocre Example” (Một ví dụ xoàng), which was also awarded by the Association of Vietnamese writers in 2021. He has published six novels, translated into English, French and Korean.
Nguyen Mot (born 1964 in Quang Nam) received the 2023 Southeast Asian Literature Prize for his novel “From the Sixth to the Ninth Hour” (Từ giờ thứ sáu đến giờ thứ chín), which had won the Vietnam Writers Association Prize in 2023 and the Dong Nai Arts and Letters Prize. He is the author of nearly 20 books in many different genres, including novels, memoirs, documentary screenplays.
Considered one of the region’s most prestigious literary events, the Southeast Asian Writers’ Awards were launched by the Thai royal family in 1979 to recognize and honor the works of contemporary poets and writers from ASEAN countries. After 43 editions, the Southeast Asian Writers’ Awards are now fully represented by all ten ASEAN countries. -VNA
