Dershowitz announces forming a team that will defend Israel in court and internationally

Renowned American lawyer Alan Dershowitz has announced that he is assembling a “legal dream team” that will be responsible for defending Israel in court and on the international stage.

Referring to the arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, Dershowitz wrote in the Wall Street Journal that “this case will be tried in a courtroom in The Hague. It will also be judged in the court of public opinion, both in the United States and around the world.”

Dershowitz said those involved in the project include former U.S. Attorneys General Michael Mukasey and William Barr, former Attorney General Seth Waxman, former FBI Director Louis Freeh and former Attorney General and Minister of Justice of Canada Irwin Cotler.

It is difficult to say what role, if any, the team will play in the legal proceedings that have been launched by the ICC.

According to Dershowitz, the team will not only argue that the International Criminal Court does not have jurisdiction in this case, but will also demonstrate that Israel’s military actions in Gaza are not contrary to international law.

Last week, the ICC issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and Gallant in connection with the Gaza war, an unprecedented move that puts them at risk of arrest and detention in a much of the world. This is the first time that the Court has issued arrest warrants against officials of a democratic country.

The court also issued an arrest warrant for Hamas military leader Mohammed Deif, who Israel says was killed by an Israeli army strike in Gaza in July. Khan had requested arrest warrants for Deif and Ismail Haniyeh and Yahya Sinwar, Hamas leaders, for the pogrom committed by the terrorist group in southern Israel on October 7, 2023, a massacre which was at the origin of the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip.
