The City of has issued a municipal decree to regulate the use of electric scooters in its streets.

In Carcassonne, this system aims to guarantee the safety of users and to promote responsible practices in public spaces. With nearly 2.5 million users in , electric scooters have established themselves as a practical and ecological means of transport. But their popularity has created problems in terms of security and cohabitation. Faced with this development, national regulations were introduced in 2020 to govern their use.

Security issues

“Users are not informed enough. We have therefore issued a municipal decree to regulate the use of electric scooters in the streets, recalling the provisions of Traffic Laws. This system aims to guarantee the safety of users and to promote responsible practices in public spaces.indicates Jean-Louis Bes, deputy delegate for public peace. An educational period will be put in place during which municipal police officers will contact users. Next January, a prevention day linked to road safety will target high school students. The main prohibitions

  • Traffic prohibited on sidewalks, squares and pedestrian paths: priority for pedestrians.
  • Speed ​​limited to 10 km/h in the city center and 25 km/h in all other areas of the city.
  • Parking only in dedicated areas: scooters abandoned on sidewalks are now penalized.
  • Prohibition on riding in groups, using headphones or a smartphone while riding.
  • Prohibition of driving in the wrong direction throughout the city.
  • Minimum age: 14 years old.

The right actions to adopt

The municipality encourages responsible conduct and reminds some essential rules:

  • Wearing a helmet: strongly recommended, although not obligatory.
  • Be careful at intersections and in busy areas.
  • Mandatory equipment: horn, brakes, retro-reflective devices, front and rear lights.
  • Compulsory insurance: non-compliance can result in fines of up to 3,750 euros.

By implementing this decree, the City of Carcassonne intends to guarantee better cohabitation between the different users of public space, while consolidating security on its streets.
