Considered by many to be the best Barranquilla Junior coach in the last decade, Julio Avelino Comesaña has expressed his admiration for Atlético Nacional and their remarkable form.
It’s no secret that Atlético Nacional is going through an exceptional moment in the second half of the Liga Betplay, consolidating its position as absolute leader of Group A with 6 points out of 6 possible, putting aside the bad period that they experienced earlier in the year under coach Jhon Jairo Bodmer.
Now, under the leadership of Efraín Juárez, the green and white team not only won their first two matches but also displayed impressive offensive power, scoring 6 goals and showing a level of play that positions them as the main contender to win the year-end title.
As a result, the strength of the Antioquian team has not gone unnoticed in the football community. In an interview with As Colombia, Comesaña publicly praised the team’s performance: “I have never seen a team so decisive, overwhelming with such speed. It is something I have never experienced before ,” said the strategist, highlighting the club’s tradition and its impact on the region: “The paisas are hardworking, Medellín is a dynamic city, and the team has a huge tradition. It is a club with glory and. a power of attraction brutal.” His words clearly indicate that, in his opinion, Nacional is the undisputed favorite to lift the title.

On the other hand, it is worth mentioning that Julio Avelino Comesaña is a name engraved in the history of Colombian football, especially for his legacy at Junior de Barranquilla. Although he coached several teams in the country, it was at the Tiburón club that he left his most significant mark, being an iconic figure for the Barranquilleros.
The Uruguayan coach has had several stints as Junior coach, recognized for his ability to instill an attacking and balanced style of play – attributes which have enabled him to win several titles. Under his leadership, Junior won the Colombian La Liga championship in 1993, marking the club’s first glorious era. Years later, in 2018, he distinguished himself again by winning the Clausura tournament, in addition to winning the Copa Colombia twice and reaching the finals of the Copa Sudamericana.
