A 21-year-old girl, Fateemah Dilmahomed, is currently traveling to India for treatment to try to save her left leg, after her right leg was amputated. This follows the incident on an escalator at the Grand Baie La Croisette shopping center last Saturday, where the victim’s feet were crushed after one of the metal steps collapsed.
Since then, several accounts of similar incidents in the past concerning the escalators of Grand Baie La Croisette have surfaced on social networks.
An Internet user, in a post on the Facebook platform, explained that his son had had an experience similar to the case of Fateemah, in Grand Baie La Croisette, but that the child had been luckier. The incident occurred on another escalator in Grand Baie La Croisette in 2023. One of the child’s feet got stuck in one of the metal steps. A member of the public reacted quickly and was able to save the child, but his shoes had been crushed.
“My son had his foot swallowed too, but luckily someone violently pulled him out of there right away and only his shoe was crushed. I reported it immediately and since then, they have closed the escalators on the Mr Bricolage side,” the user wrote.
Another Internet user recalled that there was a case in 2014, where a couple with their child had the fright of their life. The escalator in question had suddenly reversed and metal steps had opened.
In another publication, an Internet user explains having worked at Manser Saxon in the past and having spent 5 years maintaining the escalators of Grand Baie La Croisette. He explains that he repeatedly reported the poor condition of the equipment surrounding the escalators and that this caused him to lose his job.
Furthermore, the Grand Baie CID has opened an investigation to determine responsibilities. A call for witnesses has also been launched.
It should also be noted that Grand Baie La Croisette, in two press releases released over the weekend, explains that an internal investigation is already underway and that they are fully collaborating with the authorities to discover the exact circumstances of this tragedy.
The CEO of Maxcity, Lewis Ah Ching, the company that manages Grand Baie La Croisette, has extended his support to the family of Fateemah Dilmahomed and pledged to support the family in all their financial endeavors in Mauritius and abroad, among others.
