Violent fire in a sorting center near Châteauroux, two firefighters slightly injured

A violent fire broke out in a sorting center located in Poinçonnet (Indre), near Châteauroux. The fire started Saturday, November 23 early in the afternoon and burned around 50 m3 of recyclable waste, reports France Bleu Berry. It was paper and plastic that caught fire. Several gas cylinders located nearby exploded.

“It exploded, we would have thought it were bombs,” he confided to The New Republic a resident who heard several explosions.

A major emergency response system was deployed on site. The firefighters were supported by on-call officers from the sorting center of the Household Waste Treatment Union (Sytom), the site being closed at the time of the incident. Two firefighters were slightly injured during the intervention which lasted several hours.

According to the president of Sytom, the fire started in a concrete cubicle where waste extracted from paper and plastic packaging is stored. These are products that are poorly sorted by residents, such as lithium batteries for example. The fire then spread to an adjoining container.

“This fire is typically the consequence of a poor sorting gesture,” said Éric Chalmain to the local daily. This is an incident that would be avoidable if residents followed the sorting instructions. The yellow bins are only for packaging, paper and cardboard.”
