Mr. Yechiel affirmed in 2023 that recognition by Israel of Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara “strengthens regional and global security, weakens terrorist and separatist movements as well as Iranian penetration in the West African region.” He recalled in official statements “Morocco's strong involvement in efforts to combat terrorism and its effective contribution to thwarting numerous terrorist operations which particularly targeted European countries.”

He also added that Israel's recognition of Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara “will strengthen friendship and cooperation between the two countries and increase the level of trust, which constitutes a very important element to develop exemplary relations in various economic, social, tourist areas, among others.”

Yechiel Leiter, 65, former advisor to Benjamin Netanyahu, is of American origin. He is close to Donald Trump's American Republican Party. Mr. Leiter is currently a strategy advisor, notably for Israeli think tanks. Previously he held various positions, notably in the Israeli administration, notably at the head of the port authority.

Yechiel Leiter is due to take office in Washington after President-elect Donald Trump is inaugurated in January 2025.
