kyiv claims to be hit by missiles produced using Western technologies

As the war in Ukraine continues, kyiv is sounding the alarm. According to his analyses, Western components would be used to manufacture missiles targeting Russia. How ? By diverting international sanctions.

Ukraine war intensifies, Russian missiles scrutinized

Ukraine faces a troubling problem: certain missiles and drones used against its territory incorporate Western technologies. This discovery highlights the flaws in the sanctions regime. But above all, it raises questions about clandestine supply circuits.

Since spring 2024, Ukraine has observed a marked increase in the use of ballistic missiles and attack drones by Russia. Among these weapons are the North Korean KN-23 missiles, whose technological capabilities rely heavily on Western electronic components.

According to Ukrainian investigators, approximately 70% of KN-23 missile components come from manufacturers based in the United States, Germany and Switzerland. A Ukrainian intelligence official told CNN that these components play a crucial role in guidance systems and propulsion. Thus, they allow these missiles to carry out their deadly missions with precision.

Revealing debris

Analyzes of missile fragments collected from strike sites in Ukraine reveal the presence of microchips manufactured by nine Western companies, including some in the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. Parts produced as recently as 2023 demonstrate the existence of a logistics network connecting Western manufacturers to North Korea, despite sanctions.

In a warehouse in kyiv, Ukrainian researchers are meticulously analyzing missile and drone debris. This work made it possible to identify counterfeit circuits manufactured in China, used to disguise their origin. Beijing would thus constitute a key conduit in the transfer of these components.

The diversion of electronic components is often carried out by intermediaries or distributors based in the United States and Canada. According to a CAR report, 75% of the components identified in some missiles come from just five distributors. This phenomenon highlights the shortcomings of the sanctions regime. kyiv calls for a significant strengthening of the system.
