These former or current Val de Garonne high school students may not all be in front of their screens during the night from Tuesday to Wednesday at 12:20 a.m. on France 3, but these budding filmmakers will certainly watch the replay of “Rejet”. And for good reason, they are the authors of this short film designed at the end of 2023 when they were in their first or final year. “We took part in a national script competition offered by the Women and Cinema association which we won out of 167 applications,” says Aurélie Daommage, an English teacher in Val de Garonne, passionate about cinema, who accompanied them in this somewhat crazy project.
Hit by a whole network of harassers
Between cyberharassment and masculinism, young Marmandais opted for the second theme. “Le Rejet” thus tells the story of a high school student rejected by a girl, who then finds himself caught up in incel networks and becomes a stalker. “The remarks were watered down to be able to appear on the ''Libre court'' program on France 3, but when they documented themselves on these questions, the students were struck by the ease of access to these networks whose ideology rejects women,” continues the teacher.
“I was not aware of the phenomenon of masculinism. So we went to see the CPE: there were only one or two cases recorded in the establishment. As it's a subject that we don't really talk about, it was important to address it in the short. I discovered an unknown world, especially on the networks, which is not a pretty sight,” explains Quentin Fradet, undoubtedly one of the students most passionate about the project.
“They worked hundreds of hours for an eight-minute short film”
The twenty students then received the support of a professional, director Lauranne Simpere, from Douze Films to reshape their script and carry out the casting. She returned for filming which lasted three days at the beginning of July, just after the Grand Oral. “We filmed in the stadium stands and at the high school. In the end, they worked hundreds of hours for an eight-minute short film! », jokes Aurélie Da even.
Young Quentin, delighted with the result for such a short filming time, is also in film school in Bordeaux this year. “We touched on everything and it was really enriching. I learned a lot about the script part and the cutting. That year, we didn't just have the baccalaureate on our minds,” relates the man who also plays a secondary role in the film. The Marmandais will stay up to watch the collective work of the high school students during the night from Tuesday to Wednesday.
