Little competition in this category of large plug-in hybrid family SUVs, especially at this power level. But the Swede finds serious competitors on his way, with an even more rewarding image. For example the Audi Q7 which exists either in 55 TFSIe 394 hp or 60 TFSIe 490 hp. Its prices start at more than €97,000 or €105,000. It is losing speed a little but its level of technicality and equipment is equivalent to that of the XC90. It is a little more imposing at 5.07 m long. With 22 kW of battery (net), it goes further 100% electric (at least 80 km on paper).
This is also the case for the Mercedes GLE 400e. A little less powerful (408 hp), its 25.7 kWh battery allows it 111 km of autonomy. But it is expensive, starting at €99,301, for less generous basic equipment. But it looks much more modern than the XC90. Finally, the 489 hp BMW X5 xDrive50e offers a modern synthesis, more electric range (89 to 104 km with 25.7 kWh), more high-tech equipment. But it costs at least €110,000 with equipment to which you will have to add options to match the XC90.
In the end, this one is well placed in terms of price, but seems somewhat outdated by the modernity of the BMW and Mercedes, the Audi also showing the weight of the years on its side.
Takeaway: Still in the race, but on a different path
The XC90 has always been a premium SUV that’s a little different from the rest. By its atmosphere, by its philosophy. This latest restyling doesn’t change that. It offers an atmosphere as zen as its driving. An offbeat side which is also its strength.
This restyling undoubtedly modernizes it aesthetically. For once a restyling is seen on such a status vehicle, it is worth highlighting. But without technical developments, with a hybrid battery that is now a little small compared to the competition, it cannot achieve sufficient 100% electric autonomy today. Even if its overall consumption remains on track, it must be said.
The fact remains that with such a soft and comfortable behavior, its 455 hp always seems too much. Power to spare, but useless as it instead invites calm driving. That said, we understand that Volvo is only keeping this engine, which allows it, for the moment, to escape the maximum penalty of €60,000 that it would otherwise face.
But it still suffered a price inflation of around €6,500, offset by an increased equipment allocation of course. In any case, it is a valid SUV, for wealthy customers or companies. But which should be considered as a walking partner, no hassle on small roads… We knew it, we confirm it.
