Sunday shortly before 5 a.m., a fire broke out on the ground floor of a small three-story house at 1 rue de la Mairie in Furdenheim, at the corner of the Route de Strasbourg. A family of six from Chaumont (Haute-Marne) – who came to spend the weekend in Alsace – rented one of the apartments in the building. This has been redeveloped into an Airbnb rental, according to the gendarmerie.
Everyone was sleeping peacefully when the parents were awakened by a strong smell of smoke and crackling sounds. They immediately sought to shelter their little ones – three of them were in the upper levels at the time – despite thick smoke.
The alert immediately sent to the firefighters mentioned “a fire broke out in a home with a missing person: a ten-year-old girl”. One of the four children found himself trapped upstairs, despite attempts by his parents and neighbors to help him.
The victim was resuscitated
Around sixty firefighters and around twenty engines were urgently dispatched to the scene. They managed to get the child out who was in cardiorespiratory arrest. They immediately began cardiac massage with the help of the SAMU. The victim was able to be resuscitated, before being transported in absolute emergency to Hautepierre hospital in Strasbourg. As of Sunday evening, she was still in a coma.
Firefighters contained the fire using three hoses, one of which was established from the automatic pivoting ladder (EPA), said the head of operations of the Bas-Rhin Fire and Rescue Service. The fire was quickly brought under control, preventing it from spreading to an adjoining house. The firefighters then carried out the clearing.
At the same time, the gendarmes of the Truchtersheim brigade, with the support of investigators from the research brigade (BR), carried out the first investigations and hearings. They also notified the Strasbourg public prosecutor’s office.
The accidental track envisaged
On site, nineteen people – including the victims – were seen by the doctor due to smoke inhalation or a state of psychological shock. They were then collected in the communal home while the firefighters checked the CO2 level in their house. Alone, the affected family was evacuated to the hospital.
The fire expert traveled to the scene of the fire on Sunday at the request of the public prosecutor’s duty magistrate. The conclusions of his inspection are not known. However, according to a source close to the investigation, the accidental track seems favored.
