“The looming agreement could harm Israel,” Lebanese politician tells I24NEWS

As an agreement for a settlement of the conflict in Lebanon which will lead to a ceasefire draws closer, a Lebanese political actor indicated in an interview with i24NEWS in Hebrew that he was not sure whether such an agreement would benefit Israel in the long term.

“Israel as always achieves impressive military successes, but fails to follow up with political successes,” the source said. The official recalled that Resolution 1701, on the basis of which the parties signed the ceasefire, ended the Second Lebanon War in 2006, without producing positive results. “Even in this war (2006), Israel achieved military successes, which still resulted in Iran rebuilding Lebanon and increasing its influence over the country as well as strengthening Hezbollah,” he said.

He also mentioned the Lebanese army, which is supposed to implement Resolution 1701 and prevent the presence of Hezbollah forces south of the Litani River: “There are elements in the army who are loyal to Iran and Hezbollah , and therefore the solution is problematic.”

“The deployment of the (Lebanese) army could be an intermediate step, pending a more appropriate solution in which actors in Lebanon who are interested in truly engaging in dialogue with Israel and the West would come together,” he said. . “Given the political forces in Lebanon, a reality in which we have good relations with Israel is certainly feasible.”
