A fire broke out, a little before 5:30 p.m., this Sunday, November 24, 2024, in the common areas of this building in downtown Mende, which overlooks both number 16 rue Droite and number 5 rue de la République. A building which hosts, among other things, the Vietnamese restaurant Dragon d'Italie.
Around twenty firefighters, as well as three vehicles, including a large capacity tanker truck, were mobilized. The national police were also on site to secure access, carry out reconnaissance and collect the first testimonies.
An arson?
“It took on the ground floor, confided a resident. These are new boxes which burned. Someone definitely set the fire.” Another local resident even claimed to have seen “a wood fire” and also put forward the hypothesis of a voluntary act.
All occupants of the building were evacuated. Two of them were bothered by the thick smoke. They were taken care of by the medical service for an initial check in the fire ambulance.
At 6:20 p.m., all that remained was the inspection of the upper floors before the emergency services left the premises and the residents could return to their homes.
