The French Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jean-Noël Barrot, believes this Sunday, November 24 that a “solution” “acceptable by all parties” is not far from being reached in the context of the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.
The head of French diplomacy Jean-Noël Barrot called this Sunday, November 24, Israel and the Lebanese to seize a “window of opportunity” which was opening in order to conclude a ceasefire in the conflict between Israel to Hezbollah.
“A window of opportunity is opening and I call on all parties to seize it,” the Minister of Foreign Affairs declared on France 3.
“Through diplomacy, through working with the parties involved on the parameters which make it possible to ensure both the security of Israel, but also the territorial integrity of Lebanon, we are, I believe, in the process of reach a solution that can be acceptable to all parties and that they must seize so that the fire stops and the humanitarian catastrophe also stops,” he added, while calling himself “cautious”.
“Further progress”
His comments echo those of the US president’s special envoy, Amos Hochstein, who reported “further progress” towards a truce during a tour of Lebanon and Israel this week.
Supported by Paris, Washington presented to the Lebanese authorities last week a 13-point plan providing for a 60-day truce and the deployment of the army in southern Lebanon, one of Hezbollah’s strongholds.
Asked also about the international arrest warrant issued Thursday by the International Criminal Court (ICC) against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in particular and whether the latter would be arrested if he went to France, the French minister indicated: “It is a hypothetical question to which I do not have to answer as long as it is hypothetical.”
But “France will always apply international law”, he added, specifying that this mandate was the “formalization of an accusation” and not a judgment.
