A crude oil leak was detected in the Loire on Saturday evening, November 23, in Loire-Atlantique. Coming from the TotalEnergies refinery in Donges, it was stopped overnight, reports France Bleu Loire Océan.
“A 2 cm gap in a weld bead.” This is the element which caused, according to the Loire-Atlantique prefecture, a crude oil leak at the TotalEnergies refinery in Donges on the evening of Saturday November 23, reports France Bleu Loire Océan. Although it was quickly stopped, this leak still flowed into the Loire, creating “a phenomenon of iridescence with a surface area of approximately 500 m² in the river”according to information given by the Prefecture.
Several incidents in the Donges refinery
Response teams quickly isolated the faulty pipe and contained the affected area of the refinery. According to our colleagues from France Bleu, at 3:45 a.m., no more oil was flowing into the river. This incident echoes another leak, in September, this time of hydrogen, which caused a 15 cm flame. In December 2023, again, another leak led to the evacuation of 400 employees. At the same time the previous year, 400 liters of gasoline had been used.
What to worry about? No, according to the Prefecture, which considers that contaminated water should “disperse naturally and return, by the action of the wind, to the banks”. For its part, TotalEnergies indicated that “the Donges refinery regrets the inconvenience caused and is doing everything possible to resolve the situation as quickly as possible”. New analyzes will be carried out this Sunday, November 24 to assess the environmental impact of this leak.
