The low-cost electric Volkswagen, a project with no future?

Between sluggish sales, factory closures and layoffs, Volkswagen is going through dark times but remains hopeful in the electric future.

Although the launches of several new electric models and the renewal of the current range have been frozen, Volkswagen's cheapest model, the ID.2, is still announced for the end of 2025. The automobile giant with Feet of Clay even wants to make it a new starting point towards a bright future.

A voluntary and optimistic approach which does good, but a timetable which leaves one perplexed. Volkswagen has indeed announced a new style and a new visual identity for its electric range from… 2026. As it is not specified whether the ID.2 will benefit from it, we can ask the question but it is difficult to say. imagine Volkswagen working on a new car with an already outdated look. In this case you might as well just do Retrofit. Let's say instead that we can expect an ID.2 inaugurating the new Volkswagen style for the beginning of 2026.

Volkswagen is idling

Since we are talking about Retrofit, the interior should include many stylistic markers and design elements reminiscent of Volkswagen's glorious past. We already know one of the essential features with the digital displays in the “Classic” and “Vintage” driver screen, which copy the vintage dashboard of the Beetle and . Let's hope that Volkswagen limits itself to this, and possibly a small reinterpretation of the plaid fabrics or the golf ball of the gear lever, because we prefer a modern interior to a pale copy of the simplicity of the 1980s. Otherwise we repeat, there has the Retrofit!

This announcement still raises an essential question, that of reactivity rather than means. The ID.2 was announced two years ago, and we will still have to wait more than a year before the first sales. Meanwhile, Chinese manufacturers can each design and launch more than 10 new vehicles in 12 months. Batteries are evolving every day towards greater autonomy and charging speed and prices for electric cars now start below 20,000 Euros when the ID.2 is announced at close to 25,000 Euros. A good illustration of this inertia which has brought Volkswagen to the edge of the abyss…
