A car ended up almost completely burned Thursday evening in the Munt la Schera tunnel, in the town of Zernez.

In a press release, the Grisons cantonal police report that the 27-year-old driver and his passenger were driving around 5:15 p.m. in the direction of Livigno when the check engine light came on. Reaching the last slot of the one-lane tunnel, they stopped and left their vehicle which ended up catching fire.

Using fire extinguishers, the two occupants tried to fight the flames until the emergency services intervened, alerted by the tunnel operators. Arriving on site, firefighters from Zernez and Livigno managed to put out the fire.

A snow wall was built to collect firefighting water. The occupants of the vehicle were able to escape the tunnel, safe and sound.

The Graubünden cantonal police add that another vehicle fire occurred in the canton on Thursday. This time in Laax, shortly after 1 p.m., where a car caught fire despite the snow.
