Marylin Cote, who is the subject of at least five complaints, was arrested this Thursday, November 21, 2024 in the evening near Puebla where she was allegedly practicing the illegal practice of psychiatry, with false diplomas in support.
“Serious irregularities”
The announcement was made by the Puebla prosecutor's office, which accused Marylin “to offer psychiatric care and prescribe controlled medications”which could “cause harm to human health”.
on “Neuropsychology clinic” had been closed “for serious irregularities”, informed the Federal Commission for the Prevention of Health Risks (Cofepris) a few days ago.
A lawyer?
The woman is in fact a lawyer, according to some media. The pseudo-psychiatrist promised to cure depression and anxiety in a few days.
She has become the laughing stock of several Internet users who make fun of these pseudo-diplomas or intellectual faculties.
Victims denounced her methods and erroneous diagnoses in the press, saying she demanded 1,000 pesos (around $50) per session.
She was unmasked in early November by the account “Medical charlatans” (quack doctors) who claim to track down “the apocryphal doctors in the name of your health and your wallet”.
No professional license
The matter was raised to the highest level of the State with this comment from President Claudia Sheinbaum a few days ago: “It is a case of fraud, linked to health issues, which is very serious. In addition to the administrative aspect, it is a criminal question.”
“A person cannot offer health services, which is delicate, when they do not have the professional license to do so”she added, suggesting that Marylin Cote was prescribing “controlled drugs”.
“In Mexico, 34.8 million people have experienced a depressive episode in their life”assured the National Autonomous University of Mexico (Unam) in January, citing the National Institute of Statistics. The country has around 130 million inhabitants.
