The one who shifts our expectations

This Sunday we celebrate Christ the King of the universe, and the Gospel uses this same word “king” several times. However, everything conspires to make us leave the representations that we generally associate with royalty. When Pilate asks his first question, he asks Jesus not if he is king in absolute terms, but if he is the “king of the Jews”, seeking to install it in the political conflict between two camps. As is often the case, Jesus only responds with one question, to shift the wait: who says that? Jews?

But this offers him the opportunity to develop his kingship which, again, is not that of men: an earthly king would have had soldiers around him to defend him! He is a king, of course, but not for combat. Moreover, its only function is to “bear witness to the truth”which is still surprising for a king, whose function is usually to lead! Worse still, the Greek version reminds us that “to bear witness”, it is to be a “martyr”. So, who is this king?
