A 30-year-old woman faces a charge of “failing to provide the necessaries of life”. Her four-month-old baby was found dead Wednesday in a residential building in north-central Toronto.

In a statement released Thursday, police said the infant’s father reported her missing around 11:25 a.m. Wednesday.

Officers arrived at the scene, an apartment building near the intersection of Roselawn and Marlee avenues, shortly afterward. The baby has been found. Resuscitation maneuvers were carried out on the child, according to the police press release. He was then rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No further details about his condition have been released.

The investigation focused on the eighth floor of the building on Wednesday. Officers also monitored the trash chute, which was marked off with tape, while they inspected the trash room.

The boy’s mother, Karessa Edwards, a 30-year-old Toronto resident, was later arrested and charged.

The police are still investigating.
