CAQ economic update and GST holiday

CAQ Finance Minister Éric Girard presented his economic update on Thursday.

The exercise notably gave the government the opportunity to try to improve its performance, while Quebec is struggling with a deficit of $11 billion. Among the bad news, the government is raising the minimum age for the tax credit for career extension to 65, which has the effect of depriving around 200,000 Quebecers of around $1,000 per year.

The incentive is therefore eliminated for people aged 60 to 64. La Presse points out that the biggest measure of the economic update concerns the payment of $250 million for transport companies, aid which will total $879.6 million in four years.

At the same time, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a temporary GST holiday on certain products, in addition to a $250 check rebate for workers earning less than $150,000 annually. The discount will take place next spring, and aims to reward those who have worked hard to overcome inflation, we explain in a press release issued by the Prime Minister’s office.
