The town of Angoulême (Charente) will undoubtedly congratulate itself on not having won a prize during the Pics d'Or of the Abbé Pierre Foundation, Monday November 18, 2024 in Paris. She was nominated in the “Move out of there” category for an order banning begging in its streets. A text that the prefecture had taken during the summer of 2023, indicates Charente News.
“Anti-homeless devices are multiplying everywhere in France”
Anyone could no longer sit, lie or stand in the same place in public spaces. Opponents quickly demanded the withdrawal of the text and an appeal was filed by several associations including the Human Rights League. Named alongside Rochefort (Charente-Maritime) which had issued the same type of decree, the municipality was preceded by Calais where the automatic destruction of permanent installations used by migrants had been authorized.
“With this 3rd edition of the Pics d’Or, the Foundation has once again used satire to better denounce this injustice of which the most fragile among us are victims”declared Christophe Robert, general delegate of the Abbé Pierre Foundation, in a press release. “Since 2017, the Foundation has been warning about the installation of anti-homeless devices, which are multiplying throughout France. Peaks, bars, grills, rocks, anti-begging, anti-bivouac orders”specified the institution.
