Work for free for 7 hours to finance the Social Security budget? The Senate said yes, here's what awaits you

This measure risks angering more than one person. On Wednesday November 20, 2024, the Senate voted in favor of a new law as part of the Social Security budget for 2025, indicates Le Parisien. This text obliges workers to work for free for seven hours per year. This measure, considered a “solidarity contribution” by the government, should bring in 2.5 billion euros each year to the autonomy sector. It was with 216 votes to 119 that the upper house adopted this proposal. However, it is not yet definitive. Indeed, it will be debated next week during a joint committee bringing together deputies and senators. They will then have to find a compromise on this text promised in 49.3 during its final passage in the National Assembly.

“We are not making this proposal lightly”, but “today, we must find ways” to “finance the old age wall, the residential shift and the transformation of our nursing homes”, explained the senator centrist and general rapporteur of the Social Affairs Committee, Élisabeth Doineau. This law would make it possible to fill the state deficit, which today amounts to 60 billion euros. The left revolted against this text, which is notably “a hell of an attack on the working world” according to communist senator Cathy Apourceau-Poly, who assures that “this risks putting more people on the streets in November and December .” For the Minister of Accounts (…)
