War in Ukraine: for the first time, Russia fired an RS-26 Rubezh intercontinental ballistic missile at Ukraine

Russia fired a intercontinental ballistic missile from the Astrakhan region as part of an attack on Ukraine, the Ukrainian Air Force said. It is the first time that Russia has used this type of long-range missile capable of carrying a powerful payload since the start of its large-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The use of this weapon comes after Ukraine's use on Tuesday and Wednesday of long-range American and British missiles to strike deep into Russian territoryalso a first in the conflict, against which Moscow had been warning for months.

The Russian attack Thursday morning targeted businesses and critical infrastructure in Dnipro, in east-central Ukraine, the Ukrainian air force said, without specifying what the intercontinental ballistic missile was targeting or whether it had caused damage, nor the exact model of this projectile. According to information from the Ukrainska Pravda, it would be a RS-26 Rubezh.

These missiles have a range of several thousand kilometers and can be equipped with nuclear warheads or conventional loads. The Ukrainian army also said it shot down six Kh-101 cruise missiles fired by Russia during the attack.
