The Geneva Council of State will “take back control” of the automobile tax file and “review the law”, said the president of the cantonal government Nathalie Fontanet on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. on RTS. Bill increases for 2025 of up to 500% for old vehicles have been notified to motorists.
“I will not hide from you that the Council of State is extremely concerned,” Nathalie Fontanet immediately indicated in the 7:30 p.m. “We believe that it is now up to the Council of State to take this matter in hand and review the law,” indicated the Minister of Finance. “The situation is not tenable” and the Council of State met Wednesday morning to find solutions.
Scaling, tax shield and tax rebates
“The first step is to validate the text which was tabled by the PLR and which aims to provide for a staggering over 2025 and 2026”, indicates the PLR State Councilor. Then, it will be a matter of supporting the text of the Liberties and Social Justice (LJS) movement, “which plans to ask the Council of State to review the law and ensure that there is a shield, therefore a rate maximum tax increase.
“The third point is to find concrete solutions for people who today are experiencing an increase and are not able to cope with it.” The idea would be to do “tax rebates”.
“Today, we are not looking for responsibilities and culprits for what happened (…). The responsibility of the Council of State is to find solutions quickly,” indicates Nathalie Fontanet.
The President of the Government, however, recalls that this is a project led by Parliament and that the services of the competent department responded to all requests for information. “Clearly, no one has gone far enough in terms of questions,” concedes the PLR magistrate.
Quick recovery
“We will take charge, with the help of Parliament, tomorrow and Friday, of things very quickly to ensure that this situation is corrected,” promises Nathalie Fontanet.
At the origin of these spectacular increases is a cantonal law accepted in a vote last March. Entitled “For an eco-responsible and fair taxation of motor vehicles”, the text was a counter-proposal to a UDC initiative which called for a halving of the tax on vehicles.
