Val Suzon Forest in Côte-d’Or: who uses it?

A remarkable site in the Côte-d’Or: Val Suzon

In the valleys of Côte-d'Or, in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, the Suzon flows from its source between Panges and Trouhaut. In its course, it crosses right through the Val Suzon Regional Nature Reserve (RNR), an environment with a unique natural heritage extending over more than 3,000 hectares.

The Val Suzon national forest brings together all the assets for the Forêt d’Exception label®.
It is located in the heart of the Val Suzon Regional Nature Reserve and at the gates of the urban community of .
It covers an area of ​​2100 ha. Val Suzon constitutes a unique and preserved space with very diverse natural and cultural heritage.
It is also a place of relaxation and breathing for the general public.

The Jouvence site, the Sainte-Foy and Saint-Fol lookout points are hiking goals.

The Val Suzon forest attendance study reveals 3 main types of users:

  • Retirees, 32% of respondents. They come with friends to go hiking for half a day
  • Athletes: they come alone to go trail or mountain biking, regularly, at least once a week
  • Families: aged 30 to 44, they come for a 1 to 2 hour walk, a few times a year

The Val Suzon Reserve certified!

The Val Suzon Regional Nature Reserve and Exceptional Forest has been listed on the Green List of Protected Areas of the French Committee of the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature). This is a first in and in the world.

Obtaining the Green List label is conditioned by 17 criteria, for a renewable period of five years.
The Green List is based on four pillars: good governance, sound design and planning, effective management and successful conservation.


Over the past 10 years, the Reserve has benefited from nearly €1.3 million in aid from the regional council.
L’ONF (National Forestry Office) financed the project for around €1.5 million.
