WTT FINALS 2024 – After a hard-fought match, Félix Lebrun ended up giving up in five rounds against Benedikt Duda, and will not go to the quarter-finals.
Now world number 4, Félix Lebrun was the first Frenchman to enter the track during these WTT Finals. With a particularly tricky round of 16 against Benedikt Dudawho won their last confrontation after a particularly incredible match in the quarter-finals of the last European Championships. It was time for revenge, but the pressure was once again on the shoulders of the Habs.
Regrets
And the start of the match revealed real tension. Lots of rallies, which turned in favor of the German, but the Habs' service kept him in the match. After a few undecided points, Lebrun seemed to gain a slight ascendancy, and three points in advance, but did not completely break free. Fortunately, his composure gave him two first set balls, and the second was the right one. However, the match was still fiercely contested, and this did not favor the Frenchman, who suffered from the opposing attacks. Aggressive, Duda equalized at one set and seemed to have got their hands on the match.
The start of the third set confirmed this state of affairs. The German quickly led 3-0, Lebrun suffered in the exchange, was dragging the score, and above all seemed to be cruelly lacking in solutions. But he held on while waiting for a comeback, and it almost happened when he saved no less than four set points… before seeing his rival touch the edge of the table on the fifth to take the lead. The Frenchman was then on the verge of breakdown.
And with his back to the wall, he finally released his shots, unfolded his ping, and the fourth set was almost a formality. We truly found the world No. 4, but the German's combativeness had not disappeared, as evidenced by the end of the set. Then it’s time for the decisive round, with incredible tension. Duda was in the lead, and two guilty errors from the Frenchman in the service made him see the end up close. Three match points to save, unfortunately, it was one too many. Félix Lebrun s’incline 11-9, 6-11, 12-14, 11-6, 9-11 and is already leaving the WTT Finals. However, he will still have double the amount with Alexis, but it's a disappointing end to a superb singles season.
