The emergency services are still active on Wednesday morning in Morges (VD) after the strong storms which hit the town the day before. Twenty-two firefighters are on the ground, who will soon be joined by around twenty colleagues from Civil Protection. Buildings suffered heavy damage.
“We have carried out 187 interventions in total. Around 25 are still in progress this morning. These mainly involve flooding of cellars and underground car parks,” Thierry Charrey, commander of SIS Morget, told Keystone-ATS .
The interventions are focused on the surroundings of the Morges, which overflowed on Tuesday around 6:00 p.m., and on the heights of the town. “The situation is under control,” added the commander. “The level of the Morges rose quickly, but it also fell quickly. There is major damage to the surrounding buildings,” he said.

Nearly 20 million damages estimated
The Vaud cantonal insurance establishment (ECA) expects to receive between 2,000 and 3,000 claims reports after the strong storms that occurred late Tuesday afternoon. The damage could be around 20 million francs, according to an initial estimate.

“It is, however, much too early to draw a complete assessment of the event. This will not be possible for several days,” Rafael Stuker, communications manager at the ECA, told Keystone-ATS on Wednesday.
>> Details from La Matinale:
The majority of disaster cases come from the Morges region. “But damage has also been announced in the North of Vaud, in Orbe, Champvent and Auberson for example,” added Rafael Stuker.
The ECA teams are mobilized to provide information and support affected policyholders. In this period of sudden storms that are difficult to localize in advance, the insurance company recalls some precautionary measures such as closing doors and windows, securing exterior equipment and cleaning drain grilles, or even turning off electrical installations by basement.
