French President Emmanuel Macron denounced on Tuesday an “escalatory” posture of Russia in the war in Ukraine, calling “for reason” Vladimir Putin, who has broadened his possibilities of resorting to nuclear weapons.
“A power of global destabilization”
“Here I really want to call Russia to reason. She has responsibilities as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council,” Emmanuel Macron told journalists after a G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro.
“For peace to arrive in 2025, that’s what we all want. It depends first on Russia, and for it to stop attacking, bombing, killing, invading. And it then depends on the agreement that the protagonists of this conflict will be able to find. Russia today is becoming a power of global destabilization,” he accused.
Russian President Vladimir Putin signed this Tuesday, at 1,000e day of its offensive against Ukraine, the decree expanding the possibilities of using nuclear weapons, just after the United States authorized kyiv to strike Russian soil with its long-range missiles. “Among the conditions justifying the use of nuclear weapons is the launch of ballistic missiles against Russia,” according to this decree.
Macron says he called on Xi to use “all his weight” with Putin
Emmanuel Macron indicated that he had asked his counterpart Xi Jinping to use “all his weight” with Vladimir Putin to put an end to the attacks in Ukraine.
“I called on President Xi Jinping to use all his weight, his pressure, his negotiating capacity towards President Putin so that he stops the attacks,” he told journalists after a meeting bilateral.
