Fribourg-Gottéron’s European adventure ended on Tuesday. Already beaten 1-0 in the first leg in Växjö, the Dragons conceded a fatal draw at home (3-3) in the Champions Hockey League.
However, Friborg led twice, which would have allowed it to play an extension before a possible penalty shootout. It was the Dragons who quickly opened through Sandro Schmid (4th), before the equalizer, then the Swedish 2-1.
Pat Emond’s men in turn turned the situation around, thanks to two power-play goals (Sörensen and de la Rose) in less than a minute during the third period. But the current sixth in the Swedish championship quickly cooled the approximately 5,000 Friborg spectators, equalizing at 3-3 and thus ensuring their qualification for the quarter-finals.
Zurich qualified without problem
Zurich, for its part, did not hesitate to obtain its ticket for the rest of the competition. The reigning Swiss champions crushed the Germans from Straubing 7-1 (11-3 over the two matches) thanks in particular to four points from Sven Andrighetto (1 goal, 3 assists). Marc Crawford’s men will face another German team, Eisbären Berlin, in the quarter-finals.
