REPORTAGE – In Lescar, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Valérie Revel (PS) cannot find an insurer to cover her municipal buildings. Backed by the wall, the councilor denounces the 5 billion savings requested by the government from local authorities as part of the finance bill.

One phone call is enough to give him a pit in his stomach. Especially in the evening, before sleeping. Did a fire break out at the primary school? Did a tree fall on the media library? It has been almost a year since its approximately 80 municipal buildings were no longer covered by insurance for property damage. “It’s an almost daily worry to wonder if something is going to happen”says Valérie Revel, socialist mayor of Lescar (Pyrénées-Atlantiques). A simple letter from his insurer informs him in spring 2023 of the termination of his contract at the end of the year. Without any advanced reason or way out.
