a man found dead in an apartment, an investigation opened for murder

The presence of a number of police officers, in uniform and in civilian clothes, but also of the technical and scientific police, on the evening of Monday November 18, 2024 in front of a building in the Tour-Chabot district, suggested a serious matter.

It was in fact in an apartment located on the ground floor of this building at 2, rue Georges-Carpentier, in Niort, that the body of a man was discovered. For many hours on November 18, the police undertook their investigations to try to understand the causes of death.

An autopsy ordered by the prosecution

The apartment is occupied by a man in his forties, living alone. A man “discreet, but very nice”according to neighbors interviewed the next day, taken aback by the presence of the police the day before. “Its shutter which overlooks the street is always closed. But yesterday, it stayed open all day, that surprised me”confides a neighbor.

Is the body of the victim that of the forty-year-old? For now, the public prosecutor of Niort, Julien Wattebled, wants to be cautious. Without giving details on the causes of death, the latter simply states that an autopsy of the body has been ordered.

But it is indeed the offense of murder which is written on the seal affixed to the front door of the apartment. An investigation is opened, carried out by the Organized and Specialized Crime Division of Poitiers (DCOS 86), attached to the interdepartmental judicial police service.
