One in five children do not eat three meals a day in , according to a Unicef report

A Unicef report published this Tuesday, November 19 reveals that 22.8% of French children say they eat less than three meals a day and 5.7% say that it happens to them “all the time” or “often” being afraid of missing out on food.

“A hundred questions concerning their rights and their daily lives” were asked of 20,000 children, aged between 6 and 18 years old. Other subjects other than food were notably addressed in this report. Among the respondents, 16.2% are in a situation of “material deprivation”, 25.7% are faced with deprivation of access to knowledge (25.7%), as well as social and cultural opportunities (44, 4% for sporting activities and 66.7% for cultural activities).

“These deprivations, often cumulative, generate a deep feeling of exclusion among these children and adolescents, who feel constrained by a deviation from the norm, without necessarily being plunged into absolute distress,” the report states.

A protection gap

Unicef also shows that around 12 to 22% of participants declare themselves to be in a protection deficit: 22.1% of respondents say they are stressed or anxious, 14.1% say they sometimes feel sad or do not no longer have a taste for anything, 31.3% have already suffered verbal violence from children or adults, 30% have already suffered physical violence from other children or adolescents 13.1% of the share of adults. “This violence, whether committed by those around them or by institutions, increases the feeling of insecurity and rejection, and has dramatic consequences on the mental health of children,” adds the report.
