MAIN DATA FOR 2023 CONCERNING VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN

Femicides

In 2023, 115 domestic homicides were recorded by security forces – 93 of these victims were women and 22 men. Furthermore, 319 women were victims of attempted femicide within the couple.

“Forced suicides”

In 2023, the police and gendarmerie services recorded 890 victims who attempted suicide or committed suicide following harassment from their (ex-)spouse, compared to 759 in 2022, 684 in 2021 and 229 in 2020. Among these 890 victims, 87% were women, or 773.

Sexual violence

More than 110,000 victims of sexual violence (rape, sexual assault, sexual assault, sexual harassment, voyeurism, sexual exhibition, sexual exploitation, etc.) were recorded by the police and the gendarmerie in 2023. In 85% of cases, the victim was a woman, adult or minor.

An overwhelming majority (96%) of the 68,621 accused of sexual violence were men.

Judicial consequences

Concerning domestic violence, the public prosecutor's office handled the cases of more than 130,000 people involved, nearly 9 out of 10 of whom were men. Of these 130,000 people, 58,960 (91% men) were the subject of a procedure opened before an investigating judge or were prosecuted directly in court. Nearly half of the cases were dismissed.

With regard to sexual violence committed outside the couple, proceedings have been initiated against more than 18,000 people involved – or 30% of the total people involved. For seven out of ten defendants, the case was closed without further action.

Vulnerable people

Prosecutors handled the cases of 1,834 people implicated in cases of gender-based and sexual violence against vulnerable people due to their age, illness, impairment or even economic vulnerability.

Children co-victims

Some 6,500 children who are co-victims of violence within a couple have been identified by “119”, the national number for children in danger.

Accommodation

The accommodation stock dedicated to welcoming women victims of violence and their children more than doubled (+ 109%) between 2017 and 2023, going from 5,00 to 10,666 places.

Serious danger phones

As of September 2, 2024, 4,972 serious danger telephones, which allow law enforcement to be alerted and immediately intervene in the event of activation by the victim, were active in the territory. An increase of 19% since 2022 and 55% since 2021.
